At VCOC, Dr. Kanter performs every consultation and treatment himself. We are highly specialized in phlebology (vein disorders), and do not offer a smorgasbord of other procedures; i.e., we do not do liposuction, hair removal, Botox, etc. VCOC has two full-time, on-site duplex ultrasound systems, and was the first vein disorders center in southern California to offer both advanced "color-flow" imaging for improved accuracy, the first to offer ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy since 1991, and the first to offer endovenous laser treatment for large varicose veins using the FDA-approved, patented Biolitec ELVeS system.
Consultation Procedure
Because every case is different, and because veins visible on the surface often have deeper sources hiding underneath, it is impossible to provide an accurate cost estimate over the phone. Appearances are often deceiving: what looks simple to you may actually be more complicated to treat, and what looks complicated may actually be simple to treat. We therefore offer low-cost consultations by appointment. This is not a cursory, momentary glance at your veins. Vein disease is in fact a medical problem, and we treat it as such. We therefore allow time for the attention to detail necessary to make an accurate diagnosis, and to answer any questions you may have before you leave the office.
About Our Office
..............................
We start with a brief introductory video which provides answers to the questions most people ask about vein disease, including treatment options. After a careful review of your medical history and concerns, every leg vein patient receives a painless Doppler screening examination, and duplex ultrasound examination if indicated. Based on the specific findings in your case, Dr. Kanter will then personally: 1) discuss any recommended diagnostic procedures, 2) review the pros and cons of all treatment options appropriate for your case, both surgical and non-surgical, and 3) provide you with a written cost estimate. With your permission, a brief report will be sent to your referring or primary care doctor as a courtesy.
This consultation takes 30-60 minutes (depending on the complexity of the case) and costs $75.00 including Doppler; the fee for duplex examination is $250.00 if needed.
After the doctor's evaluation, one of our knowledgeable staff members will provide you with your own photocopy of the written estimate, and clarify any issues you may need more information on. Insurance reimbursement procedures are reviewed in cases of "medical necessity." For those who schedule an appointment to begin treatment, an information sheet providing details and instructions specific to the type of treatment planned is given so you will know what to expect.
Medical Insurance and Medicare
Our office uses a "fee-for-service" arrangement, and does not accept assignment of benefits. We have opted out of Medicare and are not a Medicare provider. Payment is due at the time each service is rendered. A detailed, properly coded statement of fees is provided for each visit, which you can send to your insurance company to obtain reimbursement. Insurance usually covers treatment when it is done for medical reasons, and not for cosmetic improvement. Only the above thorough consultation procedure can document the existence of medical necessity, which usually means that symptoms and examination findings attributable to vein disease are present. VCOC does not falsify codes or exaggerate findings in order to help obtain reimbursement. However, when medical necessity does in fact exist, you will be provided with a written consultation summary which documents the need for treatment in your case.
