Hand, Breast, Face Veins
...............................
Expert sclerotherapy is often effective in eliminating unsightly veins in areas other than the legs. The most common such areas are the face, hands, and breasts.
There are two basic types of facial veins: smaller spider veins, and larger "reticular" veins. Spider veins ("telangiectasia") are usually fine pink or red hairlike lines on the nose, cheeks, or sideburn areas; thicker ones often appear dark blue in color. The larger reticular veins appear green in color, are 2-3 mm in diameter, and most often found on the temples, along the cheekbone under the eye, and across the jaw from the front of the neck. Reticular veins and large spider veins are best treated by sclerotherapy, while smaller spider veins may require laser; often a combination of both methods provides the best result.
Bulging veins on the top of the hand may appear similar to bulging varicose veins on the legs, but those on the hand are not truly diseased "varicose" veins. Hand veins are normal veins which simply appear prominent, like those on the top of the feet. They appear especially large when the hand is allowed to rest lower than the heart (down by your side). Either sclerotherapy (injections) or phlebectomy (surgical removal through small incisions) is used to treat unwanted hand veins.
Some physicians worry that elimination of these "dorsal" hand veins takes away an important source for taking blood samples or intravenous lines. However, hand veins make poor choices for these purposes, and are not appropriate for emergency use. We do not treat prominent arm veins above the wrist to preserve venous access.
Reticular veins coarsing over the breasts respond extremely well to sclerotherapy.
For hand, breast or facial veins we offer a consultation by appointment for $35 to allow time for proper evaluation and to answer any questions you may have.
